Jeff Walker
I started writing poetry when I was probably 10 or 11, trying to reconcile a world that seemed unkind and dangerous. Poetry was a magic bubble in which I hid to feel safe.
I realized I was gay in 1986 when I was 24. The first poem I wrote at that time felt like the first truth I had ever written, so I titled the poem "No. 1," and then threw away everything I had written before. Since that ceremonious (and perhaps regrettable) day in 1986 I have written more than 1,000 poems. Each poem is numbered, honoring the way chaos reveals order in hindsight.
In celebration of truth, I launched this website to share my words.
Words are freedom. They have been my freedom.
I hope they help others find theirs.

My poems are about the every days and any nights, the hopes and fears, and the loves and losses that have touched my life. These are the words by which I've celebrated, endured and survived - learning to live fully and love truly, balancing fear with faith - in fatherhood, in friendship, and in Love (capital L).
It has taken years to become liberated from the bondage of self and society, learning to live wholly in the light of spirit and to shine poetry upon my days. Words are freedom.
Author's note: These poems were written over a nearly 40-year period, on various computers using different software. There are formatting inconsistencies I have left in place to be observed like a changing landscape on a long train ride. Similarly, I have refrained from editing the content or style of earlier work by way of accepting my own shifts and changes along the journey. Lastly, there are some missing poems - I've used numbers to save them their places in case they someday come home.
For nearly 3 decades, I have sent my words out in to the world every winter - poeming the people in my life with the lines of truths I encounter. I've posted these here on this site as well. They are stepping stones from then to now. They are postcards from along my journey to freedom.

In 2019 one of my poems was imbedded in concrete on a sidewalk in Cambridge, MA. It was a poem I wrote about being bullied as a kid and chased home from school, and later reclaiming the sidewalks as a grown man. The poem is now meaningfully placed as a promise of perseverance in a section of sidewalk directly in front of the King Open elementary school in East Cambridge.
